Wootz is a type of Indian steel formerly used mainly for sabre blades. It is one of the earliest known crucible steels, with production attested around 300 BC. Made famous in the Middle East as Damascus steel, it was used to make blades renowned for their hardness. Today the term ‘Damascus’ mainly refers to pattern-welded steels, and wootz-type steels are sometimes called ‘true Damascus’.
Who it's for and how to use it
This craftsman's piece, with its hand-engraved filler piece, is for collectors and lovers of Damascus steel. Its front flipper opening also makes it a pocket knife for anyone who appreciates a fine object used every day, or given for a special occasion.
Care
Wootz Damascus needs the blade to be wiped and dried after each use, then protected with a light film of oil. Mammoth ivory dislikes water, heat and knocks: clean it with a soft, dry cloth and store the knife away from moisture.
