The history of the barrel knife, also known as the "cod fisherman's knife", is as old as the fishing expeditions to Iceland immortalised by Pierre Loti in "An Iceland Fisherman". In their free time on board, Swedish fishermen used to carve pieces of birch, first to make toys for their children, then to make knife handles. The metal parts were made by the village blacksmith, who also fitted the parts to the handle. In 1874, Jakob Walfried Engström decided to make this knife entirely himself, from A to Z.
